Hurricane Sandy Update as of Monday, 11:45 a.m.

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - As Hurricane Sandy continues to gain strength and head towards New Jersey, here are the latest updates:

For Summit, New Providence, and Berkeley Heights:

BERKELEY HEIGHTS TOWN HALL IS CLOSED

Manor Care in New Providence has been evacuated and the residents moved to Mountainside.

The New Providence Memorial Library is CLOSED due to the storm. Check the Library’s  website at www.newprovidencelibrary.org or call 908-665-0311 before coming to the Library.

The Tuesday Movie for October 30th, The Lucky One (2012), will be rescheduled.

The Wednesday Morning LECTURE ON THE MIDDLE EAST is canceled for this week. It may be rescheduled at a later date. The remaining dates for the series are Nov. 7th and 28th, at 9:30 am.

JCP&L POWER OUTAGES .... The Jersey Central Power and Light Website currently reports 644 customers without service in Summit.  No outages are being reported for New Providence or Berkeley Heights at this writing.  

UNION COUNTY ADVISES THAT THEIR MEALS ON WHEELS home delivery has been suspended for today, October 29th and tomorrow October 30th.

SAGE ADVISES Due to the impending storm, SAGE Eldercare will not offer any client services on Monday, October 29, with the exception of HomeCare, which will operate on a case-by-case basis.  For questions regarding HomeCare, call 908.347.1539.  Spend-A-Day is closed to clients; There will be no Meals On Wheels deliveries; The Resale Shop and Furniture Restoration Workshop are closed; All seminars and workshops are postponed

SUMMIT TRASH COLLECTION IS TAKING PLACE TODAY (MONDAY).  A DECISION WILL BE MADE TUESDAY MORNING BASED UPON CONDITIONS FOR TUESDAY PICKUPS.   

SUMMIT MEDICAL GROUP:  All Summit Medical Group locations will close at 10:00 AM today (Monday, October 29).  

All Summit Medical Group locations will be closed on Tuesday, October 30.

Their next update regarding their hours of operation for Wednesday, October 31 will between 5:00 PM - 7:00PM on Tuesday.  Please continue checking their website, call their main number at 908-273-4300,or follow them on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+.

WATER IS ANOTHER IMPORTANT SUBJECT ... HERE'S THE LATEST FROM NJ AMERICAN WATER ....

New Jersey American Water has spent the last several days making preparations to help ensure continuous service to our customers.  We have tested and topped off all generators, and as of 8am this morning, opened our 24/7 Emergency Operations Center located at our headquarters in Voorhees.  Additionally, we have provided staffing assistance to local OEM offices in Atlantic, Monmouth and Somerset Counties. As of this morning, their operations are running at normal levels.

Finally, if you receive reports of residents not having water service, please have them call the Service Center at 1 800-652-6987.

For Madison:

The Madison Emergency Operations Center is OPEN.  Please contact 973-408-8787 for ANY utility complaint

For Chatham:

Township Municipal Building Will Be Closed Monday October 29th

To Report a power outage: Call JCP&L (First Energy) at 888­-544­-4877 or via their web site: JCP&L 24/7 Power Center. ONLY JCP&L can address power outages

• Don't assume the power company knows you do not have power. Report your outage and ensure you request to be called back when the power company believes your power has been restored.
• NOTE: Wire-involved downed trees cannot be cleared until the wire involvement is cleared by power crews. This is for the safety of the tree removal folks.
• Do not attempt to clear any trees with wire involvement yourself.
• In the same fashion, assume every downed wire is live.

Re-charge Facility:

The Chatham Club located on Southern Boulevard will be open to the public to charge a phone, warm-up and grab a cup of coffee, or take a shower.

This facility will not be available while the impending "state of emergency" is declared and the roads are not safe to travel.

Follow the updates when it is safe to be on the roads and the Chatham Club will be open.
